The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for Washlet toilets and bidet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the next generation could comprehend them. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For instance, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.

Origins

Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the country that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s in order to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own lines of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development of household appliances that are water-related. The group was formed as four-piece, and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster but not without its issues. Record companies put the band on place with the directive "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to deliver. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the hit song "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience since the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or 스포츠토토 Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write great AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound completely wrong, but actually works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format, and an even more consistent and powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloying than previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after and embarked on a tour around the world to support it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

This lineup, with the exception of Howe (who was working with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
