Special features like through-the-door dispensers, high-end ice machines, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We asked Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and the founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the best one. They weighed storage capacity as well as layout and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As its name suggests, GE’s Profile series is targeted at those who wish to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with features, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Given that this fridge costs a premium, I expect higher quality.

Other than that however, this refrigerator is a great option. It has a large freezer compartment that is not common for counter-depth French door fridges. It also has a large capacity for frozen food compared to other models.

The fridge comes with 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment has 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a fridge with a French door at this price. It has a decent sized freezer in the left side. However it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in both compartments to create customized storage layout for the items you need to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. The LED lighting is a nice feature and the inside storage bins feature the third shelf, which folds down to allow you to store large items. The drawers include temperature controls that let you set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to shut and open however I found the textured plastic coatings a bit hard on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range with Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from any place in the globe. It also comes with a lot of customization options. It will also send you notifications when the door is left unlocked and when the freezer or fridge needs to be defrosted, and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice to have GE PYE22PYNFS could offer Precise Fill, an option available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allows users to choose the number of cups they would like to disperse. It does offer a countdown on the fridge's display to display how much water you have left, but it's not as useful as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch french door fridge measurements-door Refrigerator is an impressive product. It's designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also features a veggie compartment which keeps vegetables and fruits fresher for longer periods, and two compressors to preserve food items. The Ice maker is among the best we've ever tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water usage. This refrigerator is a great option for households with a single member or kitchenettes who want a built-in look and top-of-the-line food preservation.

This refrigerator was the highest-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for various reasons. The freezer temperatures remained steady at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and never fluctuating more than a fraction a degree--this is key in preventing freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well, achieving the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping the temperature constant over the course of our tests.

Bosch has a reputation for high-end appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to control and monitor your refrigerator remotely from your smartphone or tablet. The fridge is a bit expensive, however it has excellent features and functionality for the cost.

While the fridge is an incredible piece of equipment but it's important to be aware of the limitations. It has a limited shelf space, which means you'll require some creativity when storing tall objects. The shelves are also not spillproof and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays in the fridge, but be sure to keep them clean to avoid mold growth.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S counter-depth refrigerator is a great option for those who need lots of space within a small frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge is built with a standard rf9000 family hub french style fridge freezer with beverage centre ™ door design, and two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give taller items more space. There's also a full-width drawer to store products from the deli and an inside water dispenser.

One of the nice features of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is in the freezer, making it easy to move ice into the fridge to use as required. The freezer also comes with thoughtful design features, such as sliding drawers that allow you to sort your things. It also comes with a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and an additional ice storage bin.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your refrigerator from your smartphone. It's a nice method of monitoring and managing your refrigerator, especially when you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't enhance the efficiency of the fridge. In fact it took longer to defrost and chill foods in this fridge than some of the others we tested. This could be due to its larger capacity.

The doors pose a problem with this refrigerator. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, however they're not easy for taller people to guide closed without slamming them. It would have been much better if they had handles mounted on the front.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those looking to blend the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with more efficient design. Its capacity is above average for counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a bit less than the top counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which helps make it a popular choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth french Door fridge freezer non plumbed Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune, this Frigidaire is a solid option. It's a basic refrigerator that might not be as attractive like some of its competitors however it has enough features to make it a good choice. Its most important feature is the temperature adjustable drawer which helps keep food items like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water and ice maker dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated above the two crisper bins, is another nice feature. This drawer lets you redirect some of the refrigerator's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can store foods that require extra attention. You can alter the feature using a slider that's located right on the outside of the drawer. You can also use this to set a general cooling setting for the entire fridge however, I've found that changing the general settings tends be more effective than specific ones.

In my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator were fairly consistent across all areas of the refrigerator. Temperatures at the top and bottom of the fridge didn't vary very far from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. That's a good performance however it doesn't be among the top in our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat to obtain more precise readings of the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's exterior is made of stainless steel with a grey body that has a "smudge-proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tried.
