About Toto

The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore every musical style.

In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand across the globe.

After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.

During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
